Puppy Wellness

Our puppy wellness program is the first program in the Comprehensive Wellness Program for the lifetime of your pet. Ideally a puppy should be examined within the first few days of adoption. An individualized program will be developed for your puppy and will be designed to assure proper healthcare is addressed. Generally three visits are required for young puppies at approximately one month intervals. The first visit will consist of a comprehensive examination and consultation. Discussion of appropriate vaccination and deworming protocols, behaviour, nutrition selection and breed specific health concerns will be covered. An individualized vaccination and wellness program will be developed based on your puppy’s lifestyle and previous vaccinations your puppy may have already received. Vaccination against particularly concerning diseases such as rabies, distemper, parvovirus and leptospirosis will be discussed (see “Vaccination Recommendations for Puppies and Dogs “).

It is strongly recommended that you bring a fecal or stool sample to your puppy’s first visit so we can ascertain whether parasitic worms are present. Many of these worms occur in puppies shortly after, or even before, they are born. Many clients say they “cannot see any worms” in the stool, however, the worms generally do not come out in the stool. Their eggs are passed in the stool and contaminate the environment around them, but these are microscopic in size and cannot be seen with the naked eye. Young children are particularly at risk as these worms can be passed quite easily to young children and cause significant health concerns (see “Parasite Treatment and Prevention”).

At the second and third visits, comprehensive examination will occur once again to assure your puppy is growing appropriately and we will discuss other aspects of healthcare including neuter/spay surgery, pre-anesthetic blood testing, behaviour training and socialization, heartworm and flea prevention, pet identification, dental care and nutrition. All of these subjects can be read about in more detail on our website.
